Super Eagles forward Nathan Tella scored Bayer Leverkusen’s first goal in their 2-0 win over 10-man Wolfsburg at the Bay Arena on Sunday.
After Florian Wirtz hit the woodwork from Granit Xhaka’s pass early on the match, Wolfsburg’s Moritz Jenz was given his marching orders for his second bookable offence within 12 minutes.
Riding on the numerical advantage, Leverkusen scored nine minutes later when Tella rose the highest in the box to score his fifth league goal of the season from Alejandro Grimaldo’s precise cross.
The Nigerian was replaced by Jonas Hoffman in the 70th minute. Florian Wirtz eventually doubled Leverkusen’s lead in the 86th minute, securing a comfortable win for the Die Werkself, as they remain unbeaten across all competitions this season.
Currently 10 points clear of second-placed Bayern Munich on the log, Leverkusen are edging closer to winning their first Bundesliga title, with Nigeria’s Tella and Victor Boniface also on the verge of becoming the first Nigerians since Sunday Oliseh in 2002 to win the German league.
