Nigeria international Wilfred Ndidi has officially been appointed vice-captain of Turkish giants Besiktas, marking another major step in his career resurgence.
The announcement came through the club’s official website, confirming that the midfielder will serve as second-in-command behind new captain Orkun Kökçü.
Wilfred Ndidi: A trusted leader for Besiktas’ new era
The decision reflects Besiktas’ desire to place leadership responsibility in the hands of players who influence games from central positions — a nod to Ndidi’s commanding presence and experience.
The club statement, signed off by President Serdal Adalı and the Board of Directors, praised outgoing captains Necip Uysal and Mert Günok while emphasising a fresh leadership direction.
“Our players who play more effective positions on the field should be appointed as captains,” the statement read, confirming Orkun Kökçü as first captain and Wilfred Ndidi as vice-captain.
Ndidi, 28, arrived in Istanbul this summer after leaving Leicester City, where he spent seven years and became one of the Premier League’s most respected defensive midfielders.
Since joining Besiktas, he has quickly established himself as a steady force, making six league appearances and impressing with his composure and tactical intelligence.
Ndidi leadership qualities have not gone unnoticed
Following his recent return from international duty, where he helped Nigeria’s Super Eagles secure a World Cup qualifying playoff spot, Ndidi’s appointment feels like a natural progression.
For a team eager to restore its dominance in the Turkish Super Lig, his voice in the dressing room could prove invaluable.
Known for his calm authority, tireless work rate, and consistency, Ndidi embodies the qualities Besiktas need as they prepare to face Gençlerbirliği later today.
