Tragic Incident: Nigerian Referee Dies After Lightning Strike in Niger

In a tragic incident that has left the football fans in mourning, Mustapha Bello, a Nigerian referee, lost his life after being struck by lightning while officiating a friendly football match.

The unfortunate event occurred on Wednesday afternoon at the community primary and secondary schools’ field in Madalla town, Niger State.

According to an eyewitness named Muhammed Musa, the incident took place during the half-time break at approximately 5:20 pm.

As rain started to pour, both the players and spectators sought shelter in the school’s classrooms. However, Bello and his assistant chose to return to the field, urging the players to resume the match.

Tragically, while standing at the center of the pitch, they were struck by a sudden thunderbolt, as reported by Muhammed to Daily Trust.

Following the lightning strike, both individuals were quickly rushed to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, upon arrival, Mustapha Bello, the referee, was pronounced dead, while his assistant was successfully revived.

The Nigeria Referee Association (NRA) Niger state referee council has officially announced the untimely passing of Mustapha Bello.
