Peter Odemwingie praises Austin Eguavoen’s dedication to the Super Eagles, having secured seven points from a possible nine in his fourth stint as head coach.
Former Super Eagles forward Peter Odemwingie has heaped accolades on Austin Eguavoen, the interim head coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s national team, for his passion for the job.
Eguavoen began his fourth stint as head coach in September after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) failed to finalize a deal with Bruno Labbadia. The former Bendel Insurance player has since led the three-time African champions to two wins and a draw, leaving them one victory away from qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Reflecting on Eguavoen’s impact, Odemwingie, who previously credited Eguavoen and the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) for his career success, told Brila FM, “Eguavoen was the general manager when I signed my first professional contract with Bendel Insurance. The beauty with him is that he’s a lesson to our country. He’s well-spoken, he was a committed player, and now he’s a dedicated coach. He’s always available and takes the job with passion—it’s his life. Right now, he’s doing well with 7 points in 3 games. It depends on what he is happy with.
“He’s involved with CAF, takes coaching courses, and is just a blessing to have. Whether permanent or not, he’s always ready for the job because it’s home for him, and it’s his passion.”
On the possibility of Eguavoen’s appointment becoming permanent, Odemwingie added, “What he wants is also important—if he wants it permanently and makes it known, he’ll present his plans to the NFF. If they align with their vision, he can get the job. He’s done well before and is still doing well now. I wish him all the best.”
