Kelechi Iheanacho says he is fully prepared for the pressure that comes with playing for Celtic after marking his Europa League debut with a goal in the 1-1 draw against Red Star Belgrade.
The Super Eagles striker has quickly become a fan favourite in Glasgow, and his latest comments show both his hunger and determination to carry the weight of expectation at one of Europe’s most demanding clubs.
“I’m happy to play for this great team, Celtic”
Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Iheanacho reflected on his first taste of European football in the green and white jersey.
“It felt good, to be fair. I’m happy to play for this great team, Celtic, and I’m happy to play my first European game with them. It was a good outing; we played a strong side, and we got points from it, so I’m happy.”
The forward admitted he was surprised to be called upon so early in the second half but insisted he was ready to deliver when manager Brendan Rodgers turned to him.
“Yeah, a little bit, but yes, obviously the manager made the call, and I was always ready to come in, so I came in and gave my best for the team.”
“I’m ready for it, ready to go.”
Iheanacho also gave insight into his goal, which came after his first effort was denied.
“Those kinds of chances as a striker, you felt it was in, but that was a brilliant save from the goalkeeper. So the second one, he tried as well to follow the ball, but it was at the top corner, so he couldn’t save that one.”
And when asked about the pressure at Celtic, the Nigerian was clear:
“Yeah, obviously, if I was coming in here, I know it’s a massive, massive pressure playing in Celtic. But I was ready for it, so I’m ready for it, ready to go. So hopefully we get more results coming up.”
The 27-year-old also spoke about his decision to join the Scottish champions and his early impressions of life at the club.

“Yeah, to be fair, obviously, I’ve been in touch with the gaffer for a while, but it was a good decision with my team to come to Celtic. So, obviously, as you can see, I’m enjoying it in Celtic, and hopefully there is more to come and more goals to come and more performance to come.”
Bigger picture for Celtic and Iheanacho
For Celtic, Iheanacho’s early form is a timely boost as they chase success both domestically and in Europe.
His sharp finishing and ability to handle pressure could prove decisive in ending the club’s long wait for an away win in continental competition.
For Iheanacho himself, this could be the time for his revival after a difficult stint at Sevilla.
With two goals and one assist already in his first three games, the Super Eagles star looks to be finding his rhythm again, offering Celtic a reliable outlet in attack.
