Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets started their WAFU U-17 Cup campaign with a thrilling 4-2 victory over their longtime rivals, Ghana.
The Eaglets thrashed their Ghanaian counterparts with four goals to grab the lead in the WAFU tournament on Saturday.
Both teams performed admirably, but the Eaglets, led by Nduka Ugbade, outclassed their Ghanaian rivals.
Nigeria seized the advantage in the 13th minute thanks to Emmanuel Michael’s stunning free kick.
The Black Meteors looked pretty good offensively, but not so much defensively, a deficiency that the Nigerians took full advantage of.
Nigeria’s second goal came from Precious Williams a minute before the interval, but the Ghanaians fought hard to get back into the contest.
Nigeria went into halftime with a commanding lead and a willingness to keep their strong start.
In the 52nd minute, Nigeria’s Jubril Azeez scored the game’s third goal, throwing the game out of reach for Ghanaians.
The Black Meteors, on the other end, launched a comeback and scored in the 58th minute to make the score 3-1.
However, the Ghanaians’ hopes were crushed when Nigeria scored their fourth goal in the 71st minute by Light Ike, casting further doubt on the Meteors.
Before the final whistle, Ghana earned a penalty in the 88th minute, making the score 4-2.
