Getafe president slams Christantus Uche over racism outcry

Barely three months after joining Getafe, Christantus Uche has been left hanging by the club following his comments on racism and refereeing bias in La Liga.

Getafe president Ángel Torres has rebuked Christantus Uche for sharing his experience with racism and refereeing inconsistencies in the Spanish La Liga.

In an interview aired by ESPN Africa on Monday, Uche complained about the racist insults he’s been subjected to from fans, as well as refereeing bias since he joined Getafe in the last summer transfer window.

However, Getafe’s president has criticised the 21-year-old for speaking too soon when he hasn’t been acquainted with La Liga.

“He doesn’t understand. How is he going to say that? He can’t say that,” Torres told El Partidazo de COPE. “How can he tell you that? He can’t tell you that. I think you should be more correct and respectful with those things.

“When he’s spent a year here, two years, and he understands Spanish, he can say what he wants. But now, we hope that the corresponding committees understand it and that it’s simply a warning.”

Torres also tagged Uche’s comments on Spanish referees as an avoidable mistake that was encouraged by his interviewer.

“He has made a complete mistake,” he said. “The fact that it is not the right question to ask a young man who has just arrived does not justify him speaking badly of the referees or anyone else.

“I will talk to him, as I haven’t seen the full interview. I don’t want to justify it, but someone who doesn’t speak Spanish, who has a microphone placed in front of him, seems to me that the journalist is more at fault.”

Uche joined Getafe on a four-year deal from Spanish third-division side AD Ceuta, becoming the third Nigerian to sign for the club after Peter Etebo and Ikechukwu Uche.
