Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso has expressed optimism about Victor Boniface’s physical condition ahead of the 2024/25 German Bundesliga season.
Boniface had an impressive start in his debut season at Leverkusen, scoring 16 goals and providing 10 assists in 23 games. However, his momentum was halted after he suffered an injury during Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) camp in January. The 24-year-old was sidelined for over two months and struggled to regain his early-season form upon his return.
Following the summer break and preseason preparations, Alonso is confident that Boniface is ready for a strong season. “I am pleased that he has used the time well. After the injury, we didn’t have enough time for him to train, as we needed him for the games. Now, we see a Boni who is lighter and more athletic in the box,” the 42-year-old said, per Liga Insider.
It’s a big season ahead for Boniface and Nathan Tella, who both played pivotal roles in Leverkusen’s Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal triumphs last season. The two Super Eagles forwards will be looking to defend their titles with Die Werkself this season.
Leverkusen will kick off their season with a Super Cup clash against Stuttgart on Saturday, August 17, before they start their Bundesliga title defence on Friday, August 23, when they take on Borussia Mönchengladbach.
