With a stellar year that includes over 30 goal contributions, a Europa League trophy, and a Ballon d’Or ranking, Joseph Yobo backs Lookman to win CAF Player of the Year in December.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles legend Joseph Yobo has commended Ademola Lookman’s growth, backing him to win the 2024 Africa Player of the Year award.

Yobo, who won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Nigeria noted that Lookman was a bit unfortunate not to have replicated that same feat with the Super Eagles in the 2023 AFCON.

“Lookman is a real threat. He has so much talent, and I’ve known this for five years, but now he’s much more mature,” Yobo said on Brila FM

“He was just unlucky not to win the AFCON. In the final, he wasn’t at his best, and Nigeria struggled. That shows just how important he is to the team.”

The former Everton defender also emphasised Lookman’s match-winning qualities and his improved work rate.

“On his best day, he’ll win matches for you. If he doesn’t score, he’ll assist, and most importantly, he’s improved his work rate,” Yobo added.

“He tracks back, helps defensively, and understands his responsibilities on the pitch. He needs to keep doing that, and what he’s achieved so far has already put him in pole position for African Player of the Year.”

Lookman played in his second-ever UEFA Champions League (UCL) match on Thursday when Arsenal held Atalanta to a goalless draw in Italy.

With over 30 goal contributions for club and country, a Europa League trophy, AFCON and Coppa Italia silver medals, and a top 30 Ballon d’Or ranking—the only ranked African—Lookman is well-positioned to win the CAF Player of the Year award this December.
