Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen scored his first goal of the season in Napoli’s 5-2 Italian Serie A victory against Verona despite suffering racist taunts during the game at the Stadio Bentegodi.

When Napoli traveled to face the freshly promoted Verona team, they fell behind 1-0 in the first half but rallied with a goal and an assist from Victor Osimhen.

On Monday night, Napoli had a shaky start to the new season as Kevin Lasagna gave Verona the lead.

After dominating the first half and outplaying Verona, the Neapolitans unexpectedly found themselves down by a goal after Kevin Lasagna pounced on a pass in the 29th minute.

In the 37th minute, Napoli’s Kvicha Kvarashkhelia equalized the game, and shortly before halftime, Victor Osimhen added another.

To give Napoli the lead at the break, the 23-year-old Super Eagles forward connected with Di Lorenzo’s cross.

Thomas Henry brought Verona back into the match three minutes after second half kicked off to put further pressure on Napoli. Piotr Zielinski scored Napoli’s third goal of the game before Stanislav Lobotka made it four.

Osimhen then completed his impressive performance after helping Matteo Politano score Napoli’s fifth goal of the game from 12 yards before being replaced by Adam Ounas in the 83rd minute.

Osimhen stood out as the best player of the game for Napoli, but the best moment of the night turned out to be his celebration.

The Nigerian attacker did the tongue-out gesture in front of the Verona crowd after scoring Napoli’s first Serie A goal of the season as a way of mocking the racist Hellas Verona supporters.

Soon after the game, the forward tweeted the following:

Perfect start into a long journey, we keep going. Thanks to the traveling fans for their support, God is the greatest. We move.”
