After defeating Sampdoria 2-0 in their Serie A match on Sunday at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium, Napoli returned to winning ways with a goal from Victor Osimhen.
Barely 19 minutes into the game, Osimhen scored Napoli’s opening goal by showing his killer striking instinct to find the proper spot to poke home.
The Nigerian international dashed into the area between two center backs and connected well with Mario Rui’s superbly timed pass to score his 10th league goal of the season.
Osimhen scored Napoli’s opening goal and his 11th goal in all competitions with some excellent center-forward play. The 24-year-old also created lots of issues for Sampdoria’s defense.
Napoli missed a fourth-minute penalty after Cameroon player Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa was taken down in the box, 15 minutes later, Osimhen scored.
The Nigerian forward then played a significant role in Sampdoria going down to ten men six minutes before halftime when Tomas Rincon was sent off for bringing him down.
However, Sampdoria maintained their defensive vigilance, preventing the Serie A leaders from trying to take advantage of them until eight minutes from the end, when Eljif Elmas converted from a penalty spot to make it 2-0.
The Super Eagles striker is now the first player in this season’s Serie A to score ten goals, leading the race for the Golden Boot with eight goals in his previous ten league matches.
Osimhen’s performance indicated that he is still Napoli’s key player, and if they are to win the Serie A championship, Luciano Spalletti will need him to stay safe and avoid injuries.
The Azzurri’s chances of winning the league title will be put to the test when they play host to Juventus in their next league game. The Old Lady are in solid form right now, having won eight straight games.
