Victor Osimhen celebrating Champions League hat-trick

Victor Osimhen has never been a striker content with the ordinary, but Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League night in Amsterdam felt like he was personally making his intentions clear.

At the Johan Cruijff ArenA, the Super Eagles forward orchestrated a masterclass, scoring a hat-trick that secured a 3–0 win for Galatasaray over Ajax.

Victor Osimhen’s hat-trick signals European dominance

There is no doubt, the Nigerian is one of Europe’s most compelling forwards.

The first goal, a towering header from Leroy Sané’s cross in the 59th minute, was quintessential Osimhen—perfectly timed, aggressive in the air, and clinical.

Seven minutes later, he converted a penalty with the calm assurance of a player fully in command of the moment.

By the 78th minute, he had completed his first Champions League hat-trick, slotting home a second penalty and allowing a quiet, confident nod to the away fans, as if to say, “This is just the beginning.”

Osimhen’s tally now stands at six goals in four Champions League appearances this season, placing him atop the competition’s scoring charts.

Beyond the numbers, the historical milestones are equally striking: he is the first Galatasaray player to score a brace in consecutive Champions League games and the first to record a European hat-trick for the Turkish giants since Burak Yılmaz in 2012.

For Nigerian football, this achievement comes with even more respect — Osimhen is the first Nigerian to score a Champions League hat-trick since Yakubu Ayegbeni in 2002.

After the game, Osimhen’s words were as revealing as his performance.

“We knew what the opponent would do. We were well-prepared mentally and psychologically. I’m happy with the goals, of course, but it’s a team effort. With the support of my teammates, anything is possible,” he told the club’s media.

Then came a moment the Nigerian international revealed his genuine ambition—to be Champions League top scorer.

“I think I have the quality to do so, but I’ll do it with the support of my teammates. They love giving me the ball, just like they did today. It’s a team effort, and I believe that with my teammates and their support, such is definitely possible. I will fight for it.”

Mixed fortunes for Nigerian stars abroad

While Osimhen’s brilliance stole the headlines, other Super Eagles teammates had nights of mixed fortunes.

Ademola Lookman frustrated in Atalanta vs Marseille

Ademola Lookman was a frustrating figure for Atalanta as he felt he had opened the scoring against Marseille only for VAR to rule his tap-in out for offside.

His evening ended with a tense exchange with coach Ivan Juric after being substituted. The forward is still rediscovering his rhythm, but when fully fit, the threat he poses remains unmistakable.

Raphael Onyedika, returning from an injury that had kept him out of recent Super Eagles qualifiers, displayed a composed midfield performance for Club Brugge in their 3–3 draw with Barcelona.

With 22 touches, 100% accurate passes, and flawless long balls, he showcased both defensive diligence and technical control.

Onyedika’s contribution proves just how vital he is to his club and hints at the form he can bring to the Super Eagles if fully fit.

One would gladly love to see Eric Chelle pair him alongside Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi in the middle of the park against Gabon during the World Cup playoffs.

Wednesday night was a night of mixed fortunes for Nigerian stars in Europe: Osimhen towering, Lookman frustrated, and Onyedika measured.

Yet across each story, a single thread runs through — a quiet, unrelenting determination to make their mark on football’s grandest stages.

One will hope to see this sort of determination when the African World Cup playoffs kick off with Cameroon and Dr Congo also in the battle.
