In a thrilling West African derby at the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (U-23 AFCON) 2023, the Malian U-23 men’s football team emerged victorious, overpowering Guinea in a penalty shootout.

This decisive match, held at the Ibn Batouta Stadium, was crucial in determining Africa’s third representative in the men’s football event at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games in France.

The intense encounter ended goal-less after 90 minutes of regulation time, leading to a nail-biting penalty shootout.

Despite receiving two yellow cards during the match, Mali showcased their resilience and skill, ultimately triumphing 4-3 on penalties.

Malian players Alhassane Tamboura and Mohamadou Lamine Bah, alongside Guinean Naby Camara, were cautioned during the game.

Issoufi Maiga from Mali and Guineans Aguibou Camara and Seydouba Cisse were unfortunate to miss their respective penalty kicks.

However, Mamady Diambou, Hamidou, Hamed Diamande, and Mohamed Lamine Bah successfully converted their penalties, securing the bronze medal for Mali.

Fode Camara, Mohamed Lamine Soumah, and Ousmane Camare’s goals for Guinea were not enough to deny the Malians their hard-fought victory.

Looking ahead, tonight’s highly anticipated final between hosts Morocco and defending champions Egypt promises an exhilarating showdown at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat, Morocco.

This North African derby will determine the U-23 AFCON football tournament winner and the fourth continental representative for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Abdessamad Ezzalzouli, the Moroccan attacking sensation, has already made a mark in the championship with four goals to his name, making him a strong contender for the highest goal scorer title.

In the coming months, the U-23 AFCON third-place loser will face off against the representative of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in a playoff to secure the final spot in the men’s football event at Paris 2024, France.

The stakes remain high as these teams battle for their chance to showcase their skills on the global stage.
