The Super Eagles of Nigeria concluded their Afcon qualification round in grand style with a resounding 3-0 victory over Lesotho in Lagos on Tuesday evening.
Gernot Rohr made four changes to the team that defeated Benin 1-0 on Saturday. Uzoho came in for Maduka Okoye, Tyron Ebuehi replaced Ola Aina, Alex Iwobi came in for Henry Onyekuru while Oghenekaro Etebo was chosen ahead of Joe Aribo.
A late Covid-19 test which result came out as negative ensured Alex Iwobi was passed fit by CAF to play the match.
The super eagles who dawned the famous green on green jersey dominated the Crocodiles of Lesotho from the first minute to the final blast of the whistle from the referee.
Napoli striker Victor Osimhen opened scoring in the 20th minute after a delightful assist from Iheanacho aka Senior Man Kelz. Etebo got the second in the 46th minute with an assist from Osimhen. In form striker Paul Ebere Onuachu who was substituted for Victor Osimhen got the third goal with a sleek shot to the top right corner of the keeper.
Clubless Captain, Ahmed Musa made his 96th cap for Nigeria as a substitute. He is now 5 short of Vincent Enyeama and Joseph Yobo’s record of 101.
Lagos has been in celebration mode since it was announced in February that it’d host the match against Lesotho and this win encapsulates the football frenzy that has eluded the state since 2001.
This is the second time Gernot Rohr will qualify for AFCON in an overwhelming fashion. The super eagles played 6 matches, won 4, Draw 2, scored 14 goals and conceded 7.
Nigeria go in to next year’s Afcon as one of the favourites.
Super eagles won it last in 2013 under late coach Stephen Keshi.
