Former Super Eagles of Nigeria midfielder Dimeji Lawal has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to appoint an interim coach for the Super Eagles ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The Super Eagles have been without a coach following Finidi George’s resignation in June. The former Ajax winger left his role after a disappointing start to his tenure as Jose Peseiro’s successor.
Despite the imminent commencement of the AFCON 2025 qualifier in September, the NFF has yet to name a head coach who will oversee the Eagles’ fixtures.
“I really think the NFF must make a drastic decision to appoint a new coach for the Super Eagles since the qualifiers are around the corner,” Lawal told Complete Sports.
“Delays in the appointment of a coach often affect the team’s performance because the coach does not have time to relate perfectly to the players.
“But if it doesn’t happen that way, then the NFF should appoint a coach on an interim basis for the Super Eagles.”
The Super Eagles were drawn against Benin Republic, Libya, and Rwanda in Group D of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
The West African giants will kick off their qualification campaign against Benin at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on September 7, before going away to Rwanda seven days later.
