Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic has thrown his full support behind Semi Ajayi’s return to international duty as the defender prepares to join the Super Eagles for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin Republic.

Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic praises Semi Ajayi’s international return

The Nigerian centre-back, who has seen limited minutes for Hull since returning from injury, is viewed as a key figure in Nigeria’s push to secure a ticket to the World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Semi Ajayi’s return boosts Super Eagles’ World Cup push

Ajayi has played just eight minutes of competitive football for Hull since recovering from his injury, but that hasn’t deterred Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle from naming him in the 23-man squad for the October qualifiers.

Jakirovic believes the international stage is the perfect platform for Ajayi to rebuild his match fitness and confidence.

Speaking after Hull’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United, the Croatian tactician explained the value of international football for players striving to find rhythm.

“I’m OK because you cannot stop them,” Jakirovic told Hull Live. “I know that next year is the World Cup, so when it’s the World Cup, everyone is buzzing. I hope he (Ajayi) will play because he needs it, and Liam as well.”

The Hull boss stressed that the Nigerian defender’s participation in the qualifiers could be beneficial not just for the Super Eagles but also for Hull’s domestic campaign.

Hull City eyes a fit and confident Semi Ajayi after the break

The Tigers are eager to see a fully fit Semi Ajayi return to the fold after the international break.

Jakirovic expressed hope that both Ajayi and winger Liam Millar—another player working back to full fitness—will return injury-free to help Hull in the coming fixtures.

“I hope they all will play something—Semi (Ajayi) and Liam (Millar)—and they will return healthy,” the Hull boss added.

Nigeria, currently third in Group C, faces must-win encounters against Lesotho and Benin to keep their qualification hopes alive.

For Ajayi, the qualifiers offer more than just a shot at World Cup progression; they present a vital opportunity to sharpen his form and reclaim a regular spot in Hull’s starting XI.
