Bulgarian First League side Botev Plovdiv have made a major splash by signing Nigeria international Samuel Kalu, a move that will not only help revive the winger’s career but also extend the club’s long-standing Nigerian connection dating back to 2008.
For Kalu, the deal marks the end of a frustrating 13-month wait without a club after leaving Watford in August 2024.
Samuel Kalu joins Botev Plovdiv in redemption move
Now 28, he arrives in Plovdiv with rich experience and a point to prove.
A graduate of the Golden Boot Soccer Academy, he has played on some of Europe’s biggest stages—from the Premier League with Watford to over 70 Ligue 1 appearances for Bordeaux.
He has also made his mark in continental competitions, contributing goals and assists in both the Champions League qualifiers and the Europa League.
Botev confirmed that the Nigerian has penned a long-term deal, presenting him as one of their most high-profile arrivals in years.
Extending Botev Plovdiv’s Nigerian Legacy
Kalu becomes the seventh Nigerian to sign for Botev since 2008, joining a growing list that includes Tochukwu Nnadi, Umeh Emmanuel, Samuel Akere, and most recently Armstrong Oko-Flex.
While many of those names were rising prospects, Kalu stands out as an established Super Eagles international with tournament pedigree.
At the national team level, he featured in three matches at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and has 16 caps, scoring twice and assisting three times for Nigeria.

His arrival therefore symbolises more than just a transfer — it highlights how Botev Plovdiv continues to see value in Nigerian talent while offering Kalu the platform for a much-needed career revival.
Botev have been busy in the market, adding 17 players in recent months as they attempt to climb the league table.
In this context, Kalu’s arrival feels like the centrepiece of their recruitment drive — a signing that could inspire both the squad and the supporters.
For Kalu, this is a chance to reset, rediscover his rhythm, and perhaps write a new chapter in a career that once promised so much.
And as for Botev, it is another step in their growing Nigerian golden legacy.
