Super Eagles of Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro has challenged his players to improve their goal-scoring tally ahead of their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semifinal clash against South Africa on Wednesday, at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké, 6pm (WAT).
After narrowly securing a 1-0 win against Angola in the quarterfinals, Peseiro admitted his team’s stroke of luck and emphasised the need to execute their chances, if they’re ever going to lay claim to the AFCON trophy.
The Super Eagles have only scored more than once in their past five games, taking their total goals to six in five games, although they’ve also amassed four straight clean sheets in the same amount of games.
Reacting to this after the 1-0 win over Angola, Peseiro said, “Once again, we played without conceding and scored a goal, but I would have liked to see more. The team had the potential to generate more chances.
“We possess a talented team, and while Angola performed admirably, we were more fortunate. I am content with my players, but I want us to be more efficient.
“We’re missing some key creators like Iheanacho and Aribo, so it’s been hard. But others must now step up,” the Portuguese concluded.
Nigeria vs South Africa’s head-to-head
Come February 7th, the Super Eagles will have a go at the Bafana Bafana in a bid to secure a spot in the AFCON 2023 final.
Nigeria are heading into the game with a better head-to-head record, as they’ve won a whopping five matches in the past nine against South Africa, drawn three and only lost one.
