Josh Maja reminds fans of his class with first goal in West Brom’s win over Norwich

Super Eagles striker Josh Maja marked his first start of the season with a decisive strike as West Bromwich Albion edged past Norwich City 1-0 in their Championship clash at Carrow Road on Wednesday evening.

The 26-year-old forward, who had come off the bench in West Brom’s previous five matches, seized his opportunity to deliver the winner that ended the Baggies’ three-game winless run.

Maja seizes his moment to lift West Brom

Maja’s story this season has been one of patience and perseverance. After a long recovery from calf surgery that sidelined him for most of the 2024/25 campaign, the Nigerian international faced uncertainty over his future during the summer transfer window.

A potential move away from the club never materialised — a decision that now looks like a turning point for him.

Last season, before his injury setback, Maja had scored 12 goals and provided two assists in 26 appearances, becoming a vital figure in West Brom’s attack. On Wednesday night, he showed signs of regaining that sharpness.

It took him just 20 minutes to make his mark. A flowing move down the right flank saw the ball whipped across the box and parried by the Norwich goalkeeper.

The loose ball fell invitingly to Maja, who reacted with a striker’s instinct, slotting home from close range to give the visitors the lead.

Baggies back on track in promotion race

Maja put in a lively performance for an hour before making way for Aune Selland Heggebo.

His early goal proved enough for the visitors, who defended resolutely to secure a much-needed three points.

The result lifted West Brom to fourth in the Championship table, just four points behind leaders Middlesbrough.

It also ended a frustrating run of two defeats plus a draw against Leicester City, restoring belief in their promotion campaign.

Next up for Maja and his West Bromwich team is a home clash against Millwall on Saturday — a chance to build momentum and further close the gap at the top of the table.
