Former NPFL Golden Boot Winner, Chijioke Akuneto, embarks on an exhilarating new adventure as he officially signs with South African powerhouse Sekhukhune United, signaling an exciting chapter in his already promising football career.

The 25-year-old Nigerian striker captured the attention of football enthusiasts when he claimed the NPFL golden boot in 2022 campaign by scoring an impressive 19 goals for Rivers United.

Akuneto’s remarkable performance on the field played a pivotal role in guiding Stanley Eguma’s side to NPFL glory, a momentous achievement both for the talented player and the club.

The race for the golden boot was a fierce one, with Akuneto surpassing stiff competition from renowned players like Victor Mbaoma and Yusuff Abdulazeez.

Nevertheless, the former Rivers United star emerged victorious, finishing the season with an impressive three-goal lead over his closest rivals.

His football journey started with his professional debut at MFM FC and later making significant moves to FC Heartland and Rivers United, all while proving his worth as a free agent.

In his most recent stint at Enyimba, Akuneto faced challenges that prevented him from fulfilling the lofty expectations surrounding him.

Now, with a fresh start at Sekhukhune United, he is eager to reignite his form and demonstrate his true potential once again.

Having already joined the club for their pre-season activities in South Africa, Akuneto is keen on adapting swiftly and making a positive impact on the team.

An early test awaits the Nigerian forward and his new club when they face Mamelodi Sundowns on 4th August, marking the commencement of the 2023/24 DSTV Premiership league campaign.

The match promises to be an electrifying spectacle as fans watch with bated breath to see Akuneto’s prowess on full display.
