Super Eagles defender – Calvin Bassey made his debut Champions League appearance on Wednesday as Ajax cruised to a 4-0 victory over his former side Rangers at the Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam.
Bassey and his teammates kicked off their UEFA Champions League campaign on a solid note with Edson Alvarez, Steven Berghuis, Mohammed Kudus, and Steven Bergwijn all on target for the Eredivisie side.
The Nigerian defender proved his class during the game with a solid performance and capped it off with an assist to his name, helping the four-time European winners to a huge victory.
The game was already out of reach for Calvin Bassey’s former team when the Alfred Schreuder team went up 3-0 in the first half.
Ajax took the lead after just 16 minutes of play thanks to a magnificent header from Alvarez, who was left unmarked in the box during a corner kick.
Berghuis then made it 2-0 before Kudus extended the Alfred Schreuder team’s lead further to three goals in less than two minutes, thanks to Bassey who turned provider for the third goal.
The stunning strike by Barisic for Rangers gave the visitors hope that they had a consolation goal, but VAR chalked it off because of an offside in the buildup.
Later on in the game, Bergwijn took advantage of a misplaced backpass to put the game away by scoring into an empty net.
“God is great. Special night for me yesterday. Good to get the win and was nice to see so many familiar faces.” – Bassey on his twitter page.

With that victory, Ajax has taken the lead in Group A, after Liverpool surprisingly lost 4-1 to Napoli. They will play the Reds next in the competition after facing Heerenveen in the league.
Rangers has already lost two straight games and unfortunately Calvin Bassey is no longer part of the team, as they take on Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership this weekend in an effort to turn things around.
