Boniface’s 23-goal contribution in 23 league appearances helped Bayer Leverkusen win their first-ever Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 campaign, now Xabi Alonso wants him to do more.
Xabi Alonso, head coach of Bayer Leverkusen, has challenged Victor Boniface to raise his game beyond his current level.
This came after Boniface scored twice and provided an assist in Leverkusen’s 4-1 victory over Hoffenheim on Saturday, September 14. It was the Super Eagles striker’s first time scoring in the 2024/25 Bundesliga season after his 23-goal contribution helped the club win their first-ever Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 campaign.
“He can and must do more. He knows it, and the team needs it,” Alonso said of Boniface.
The Spanish tactician also praised Boniface’s jovial nature, noting that it lifts the mood in Leverkusen’s dressing room, although he admitted that the striker sometimes struggles to stay focused.
“All his teammates really like him; he [Boniface] creates a great atmosphere,” Alonso said. “Sometimes, you have to push him to focus solely on football, but that’s my job, and that’s what I’m working on.”
Off the pitch, Boniface has earned a reputation as the king of memes and captions, thanks to his constant banter on social media. The 23-year-old’s stellar performances last season earned him the Bundesliga Rookie of the Year award and a spot in the league’s Team of the Season.
