Many Nigerians have featured in the Premier League over the years, but few have shown the consistency and longevity of Alex Iwobi.
The Super Eagles midfielder reached a remarkable career milestone this weekend, becoming Nigeria’s all-time leader in Premier League appearances.
Alex Iwobi breaks Ameobi’s long-standing record against Arsenal
The Fulham star achieved the feat in the club’s narrow 1–0 home defeat to Arsenal at Craven Cottage in the ongoing 2025/26 Premier League season.
Although the Cottagers’ winning run ended after Leandro Trossard’s decisive strike for the Gunners, the night still belonged to Iwobi.

His appearance took him to 299 Premier League games, surpassing Shola Ameobi’s long-standing record of 298 — a benchmark that had stood for over a decade.
Iwobi’s achievement seals his place among the nation’s finest exports to England’s top flight.
From Arsenal to Fulham – A journey of consistency and growth
Iwobi began his Premier League journey with Arsenal, the same club that now witnessed his record-breaking moment.
After moving to Everton and later to Fulham, he evolved from a promising academy product into one of the most reliable Nigerian footballers in Europe.
Known for his tactical versatility, Iwobi has played across multiple attacking and midfield roles — on the wing, in central midfield, or behind the striker. His adaptability and work ethic have kept him relevant in a league renowned for its pace and physical demands.

Before Iwobi’s rise, Shola Ameobi stood as the symbol of Nigerian endurance in the Premier League.
The former Newcastle United forward made 298 appearances, becoming a fan favourite for his strength, loyalty, and commitment during his long spell with the Magpies.
Behind Iwobi and Ameobi are other notable Nigerian icons: Nwankwo Kanu with 273 appearances across Arsenal, West Brom, and Portsmouth; Yakubu Aiyegbeni with 252 for Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, and Blackburn; and John Obi Mikel, who recorded 249 appearances for Chelsea.
Super Eagles influence and future prospects
Iwobi’s latest achievement comes just after the international break, where he helped the Super Eagles of Nigeria boost their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign with wins over Lesotho (2–1) and Benin Republic (4–0).

His club and international form reflect a player still at the top of his game, driven to extend Nigeria’s record even further.
Still only 29 and in peak condition, Iwobi’s leadership and experience continue to inspire the next generation of Nigerian footballers dreaming of the Premier League stage.
