Sturridge: Reds will kick on

Daniel Sturridge believes Liverpool have made the signings to see them challenge for top honours this season following the departure of Luis Suarez.

Suarez completed his much-anticipated move to Spanish giants Barcelona earlier this month as the Reds decided to cash in on the controversial striker after his inexplicable bite on Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup in Brazil.

Brendan Rodgers has already used the mammoth £75 million fee to strengthen a number of areas of the pitch, the most high-profile captures of which are Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren, who all arrive from Southampton, and Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen.

And Sturridge is confident the Merseysiders can maintain the winning mentality they displayed last season as the narrowly missed out on ending their 24-year wait for a League title.

“We have a lot of players who can step up. Luis has left and that is football, he’s moved on,” the England international told theDaily Mirror.

“For me, with the signings the manager has made, exciting players, young players, real up and comers, we are going to have that winning mentality.

“Players come and go, that’s the nature of the game. Some will remain at a club their whole career like Stevie Gerrard and some will move.

“It doesn’t matter. We will still have the mentality to move forward, be an exciting squad, playing attacking football, and that’s the Liverpool way. We will continue to do that.

“I’m excited about the new season. Last season we were the underdogs, but now people expect us to kick on.

“It’s a great chance to show what we can do again. Regardless if we are underdogs or favourites, our mentality won’t change.”

Sturridge, who netted 21 goals in the Premier League last season, is rated at in the upcoming campaign.
