Three second-half goals from Southampton ensured they ran out 3-1 winners over Turkish side Besiktas in Austria on Saturday.
After Muhammed Demirci opened the scoring for the visitors, the Premier League side fought back with goals from Rickie Lambert, Emmanuel Mayuka and Lloyd Isgrove.
The first half saw very few chances for either side, with Southampton’s best effort coming 38 minutes in when Danny Fox tested Cenk Gonen with a low drive.
James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick a minute later also worked the Turkish goalkeeper but he managed to turn the ball around the post.┬á
After the break, the Turkish outfit increased the pressure as Hugo Almeida brought a good save from Artur Boruc.
Besiktas were rewarded for their bright start to the half 17 minutes in, when substitute Demirci smashed an effort past Boruc from 30 yards out.
Mayuka then had the ball in the net after 73 minutes before the goal was ruled out for offside although the home side then turned the game on its head.
Another substitute, Lambert, put Southampton level with a neat finish before Mayuka put his side ahead with a left-footed volley, his first goal for the club.
It was almost 3-1 to Mauricio Pochettino’s men when Steven Davis chipped Gonen, only for his effort to hit the crossbar before Isgrove did make it three a minute from time.
