Simeone Signs New Atleti Contract Extension

Diego Simeone has signed a new contract that will keep him at Atletico Madrid until 2022, the La liga club has announced.

Simeone’s old deal was set to expire in 2020 but he has agreed new terms that reportedly makes him Atletico’s top earner, with a salary higher even than that of star forward Antoine Griezmann.

The news comes after he extended his deal by two years in September 2017, having earlier agreed to reduce the length of his contract not long after Atletico’s defeat in the 2016 Champions League final.

Atletico are third in the La Liga table, seven points behind leaders Barcelona and one behind Real Madrid having lost 3-1 in the derbi earlier this month.

Simeone has been named La Liga’s coach of the year three times, but he has never won the Champions League and has finished as a runner-up twice — losing to Real Madrid in 2014 and 2016.
