Barcelona defender Gerard Pique said it would be in Manchester City’s best interests to avoid focusing on Lionel Messi alone during their Champions League last 16 fixture on Tuesday.
Pique was quick to highlight that while Messi has been the team’s talisman for the past five seasons, the Catalans do have other weapons on the field.
The performances of Alexis Sanchez and Pedro have been perfectly adequate this season and the Barcelona defender insists they are as big a threat as Messi himself.
However, the stand out player for Pique and possibly the heir apparent to Messi is Brazilian striker Neymar.
“He (Neymar) is really young, he’s got a lot of hunger to show to the world that he is right for Barcelona and that he’s one of the best players in the world,” Pique told the Telegraph this week.
“His quality, his skills, his goals, have added a lot to the team and at the same time maybe he takes a little bit of the focus.
“Everything was on Messi, with everyone trying to stop him. Now we have another way. Ok, if it’s not Messi’s day, we have Neymar, we have Pedro, we have Alexis [Sanchez], we have a lot of quality in the striker area, and I think that’s really good for the team,” explained the Barcelona defender.
