New York City FC have officially confirmed the signing of Chelsea legend Frank Lampard ahead of their maiden Major League Soccer season in 2015.
The Manchester City-New York Yankees owned franchise have already signed all-time Spain top scorer David Villa as their first player and have loaned him out to affiliate club Melbourne City until next year.
They’ve now added their second big-name star and NYCFC sporting director Claudio Reyna is delighted to welcome Lampard to the club.
“Simply said he’s one of the greatest players in world history,” Reyna said at the England international’s unveiling.
“We’re going to use the rest of the week to make a decision that’s best for the club in terms of getting him ready for 2015.
“He’s a professional. A leader. He ticked all the boxes in terms of the qualities to help grow our team.”
Lampard added: “I want to carry on challenging myself. I want to be that leader on and off the pitch.
“I’m coming to a great city and I want to show that I can play great football and be a great personality in the locker room.
“I’ve been watching games in the MLS for a long time back home. It’s a great opportunity and a great challenge for me.
“I’d love to make the New York City fans see that I will give everything. We want to bring a team here that you can be really proud of.
“I will fight to make NYCFC a club that New Yorkers will be proud of.”
