There were no shocks of note as the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) officially flagged off over the weekend with only 6 games played.
There were no shifts in the balance in the 47th edition of Nigerian League as big boys collected maximum points.
Enyimba were the most comfortable in their victories over the weekend as the ‘Peoples’ Elephant’ brushing past MFM 2-0 at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba. The victory automatically afforded Enyimba a claim to the number position in Group A of the now abridged NPFL.
Elsewhere at the Ilorin Township Stadium, Kwara United came from a goal behind to share the spoils with Sunshine Stars.
Sasere Franklin put Sunshine Stars ahead four minutes into the break with a lovely lob from the edge of the box.
But Kwara United were back on level terms through an own goal from Seun Olulayo who diverted Usman Mohammed’s cross beyond his own goalkeeper with 20 minutes to play.
The other games from the group did not hold as they have been postponed by the League organisers.
Moving To Group B
In a league where away wins are synonymous to finding a unicorn, El Kanemi recorded the first away win (and hopefully more to come) of the season as they edged Akwa United 0-1 in Uyo.
Four time league champions, Kano Pillars got off to winning start as they pipped visiting Heartland FC by a lone goal.
Sunday Chinedu’s 16th-minute goal was enough for Pillars to get maximum points on the opening day of action in the league.
Elsewhere, Nasarawa United got the better of Abia Warriors 1-0 in Lafia while reports suggested that there was crowd trouble in Jos following the barren draw between Plateau United and FC Ifeanyiubah.
