Chelsea ace Eden Hazard is not guaranteed to sign a new contract at Stamford Bridge even if he is named captain, according to reports.
There has been feeling inside the club that the ex-Lille ace would be more likely to pen a new long-term deal should he be given the extra responsibility.
However, the Telegraph claim that the Belgian would not factor that into his decision making.
The 27-year-old has been in scintillating form for Maurizio Sarri’s men so far this season, with seven goals in eight games across all competitions.
And after scoring against Liverpool in Saturday’s 1-1 draw, he refused to rule out a move to Real Madrid as it remains his “dream to play in Spain”.
Meanwhile, Hazard’s team-mate Cesar Azpilicueta is hoping to land the captain’s armband on a permanent basis.
Azpilicueta is in pole position to land the position, with the defender captaining the team through an unbeaten Premier League campaign to date.
Sarri has already confirmed he’s made his final decision on the captaincy – although he won’t reveal his choice just yet.
He said: “I want to speak with my club face to face before I tell you my decision.
“I think it’s right the club knows my decision before the journalists.
“It has been impossible in the last two or three weeks, but I think it will be possible next week.”
