Manchester City wrapped up their straightforward passage into the Champions League quarterfinals 5-2 on aggregate after a 2-1 loss against Basel at the Etihad on Wednesday.
City came into the match clear favourites to advance after a 4-0 defeat of the Swiss side Basel.
Pep Guardiola rested a few of his regulars while giving Phil and Foden, Yaya Toure rare spots in the starting XI along with Gabriel Jesus, who is returning to rhythm after a lengthy injury absence.
Following a mazy Leroy Sane run that left multiple Basel defenders behind, Bernardo Silva’s cross across the goalmouth found an unmarked Jesus who tapped into the empty net with his left foot.
The goal marked his first since Nov. 18, which ended a 13-match scoreless streak.
Basel answered in the 17th minute through Mohammed Elyounoussi, who smashed home from close range after some slack City defending left him with space in the box.
The visitors added another in the 72nd minute when Michael Lang ran onto Elyounoussi’s slipped-in pass and fired high and hard past Claudio Bravo at the near post.
