Mali defeated Senegal 3-2 on penalties to claim their maiden Total U-20 Africa Cup of Nations title following a 1-1 stalemate after extra time in Niamey, Niger Republic.
Senegal found themselves behind for the first time in the cup competition after Bizertin midfielder Boubacar Traore put Mali ahead only 16 minutes into the match however, Metz forward Amadou Ndiaye restored parity for Senegal 15 minutes to the end of the game to force extra time .
The contest went into extra time, and with neither side able to separate themselves from the other, a penalty shootout was needed to decide the champions.
The Malians held their nerves in the shootouts as they went on to win Senegal 3-2 to lift the title for the first time in the nation’s history.
Mali will go to the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup to be hosted in Poland as African champions alongside Senegal, South Africa and Nigeria who were all semi finalist at the CAF U-20 tournament.
