Former Real Madrid general manager and striker Jorge Valdano wasn’t shy about giving his opinion regarding the possibility of Lucas Vazquez playing right-back in the upcoming second leg of the Champions League semi-final, that pits Los Blancos against Bayern Munich.
The Galician winger was called upon to fill the void left by Dani Carvajal’s injury in Real’s 2-1 victory at Allianz Arena and could do so again.
“If Nacho is out, Lucas doesn’t have the experience to play right-back,” the Argentinian said in a Radio MARCA interview.
“He did well the other day for 20 or 25 minutes. He has personality and he is willing to sacrifice, but he hasn’t worked out the rhythm and tactical discipline that is necessary to play 90 minutes.”
Madrid’s lack of depth at right-back on Tuesday could be a major key to the game . If Lucas gets the start he will be matched up with one of the world’s most feared attackers: Franck Ribery.
“It’s an extraordinary situation for him,” said Valdano. “He has a match-up that is not going to be easy to deal with for 90 minutes
“When Lucas has played, he’s always been up for the challenge. If he’s asked to play like a soldier, he will deliver.”
The other two options that Zidane has at his disposal are Theo Hernandez and Achraf Hakimi.
“They aren’t going to be counted on for a match of this magnitude,” the ex-striker explained.
“Both are skilled and have a bright future, but they need more experience before playing an European match of this stature.
“The atmosphere at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu is corrosive, it’s terrible for young players.
“Maybe it would be best for them to go to another team and then return.”
