Liverpool hope Daniel Sturridge will be fit for the start of the season after he suffered an ankle injury on international duty last week.
The 23-year-old was stretchered off during England’s match against the Republic of Ireland last Wednesday, raising fears he may not be ready for the start of the 2013-14 Premier League campaign.
However, Liverpool have now confirmed they hope he will return in time for August 17.
The striker suffered a high ankle sprain and a full assessment of the damage was postponed until the swelling had subsided.
The diagnosis came after England manager Roy Hodgson had initially suggested that Sturridge would be out for a few weeks with ligament damage, but the injury was clearly more severe.
Sturridge has scored 11 goals in 16 appearances for Liverpool since joining from Chelsea in January.
