The Chelsea boss watched his side extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to three points on Monday night thanks to a 2-0 win at Stoke city.
Mourinho is aiming to win his third top-flight title with the Stamford Bridge club this season after having led the Blues to victory in 2004-05 and 2005-06.
And former Manchester United boss Ferguson, speaking in an exclusive interview with the Clare Balding Show on BT Sport, has revealed that he holds Mourinho in high regard.
“I think he’s a great example,” said Ferguson.
“He can speak five languages, or whatever he can. He goes and works under Bobby Robson, follows him to Barcelona, works under Louis van Gaal – he’s learning all the time and has the determination to be a coach.
“He never played the game. You tell me how many presidents would have given a manager who has never played a job – none. But he’s done it.
“That’s an example to anyone who wants to do well – you shouldn’t let the barriers be in your way if you want to get there.”
