If Lucas Vazquez and Asensio are playing, it’s because they deserve to- Zidane

Real Madrid showed no sign of letting up in their LaLiga campaign with victory over Girona and two stars of Sunday’s game, Lucas Vazquez and Marco Asensio, were in for special praise from Zinedine Zidane.

Picked to start at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, both players were highly involved with Vazquez getting his name on the scoresheet.

“If they are in the side it is because they deserve to play and because they are doing very well,” stated Zidane to the assembled press.

“I value the work of each of them, and of all the players.

“We’ve many games left and we have to continue like this, everyone has to work.”

Grabbing the spotlight versus the Catalans was four-goal hero Cristiano Ronaldo , who Zidane spoke of in glowing terms for his commitment in training and throughout matches.

“Ronaldo is very important to us, he transmits an energy across the whole group,” added the Frenchman.

“He knows himself very well and he knows when he has to stop a bit so that, when the end of the season arrives, he hits top form.

“He is tremendous. In training he is incredible. For example, if there is a penalty, he takes it with maximum concentration. And that is only training. It is incredible.

“But I also want to highlight his colleagues, who help him a lot. We scored some spectacular goals that came from the whole team.”

Madrid have improved since exiting the Copa del Rey and Zidane discussed why after Sunday’s win, but shot a word of caution to his defence as they once again failed to keep a clean sheet.

“It is a bit of everything, but above all, trust,” he said. “We have regained confidence and that has been evident in our home games.

“We have scored many goals in four or five games at the Bernabeu, which we didn’t do at the start of the season.

“And then there is Cristiano. When Cristiano is fine, the team is fine. And then it’s important that the team doesn’t take its foot off the pedal.

“We have to improve things [defensively]. I’m not happy with the three goals conceded and that has to be improved, we have to work on it.”

After the international break, Real go to Las Palmas on Saturday, March 31.
