Petr Cech has showered praise on team-mate Frank Lampard after the midfielder’s goal against Stoke City cemented him as Chelsea’s second-highest goalscorer.
The second-half penalty in the 4-0 win took LampardÔÇÖs tally to 194 ÔÇô moving him above Kerry Dixon and just eight away from all-time top goalscorer Bobby Tambling.
Lampard’s future appears to lie away from Stamford Bridge after his agent confirmed last week that the 34-year-old would not be offered an extension to his expiring contract ÔÇô but Cech still remains hopeful that the England international can remain at the club.
“There are still six months to go to the end of the season,” Cech told reporters. “WeÔÇÖll see at the end of the season whether he stays or not.
“I donÔÇÖt know, as IÔÇÖm not a director, but if he keeps playing like that then obviously he will keep asking about the extension.”
Lampard’s goal at the Britannia Stadium took his tally to seven in just 13 Premier League outings this season, behind only Juan Mata and Fernando Torres in the Blues’ scoring charts,
The youthful talents of Ramires, Oscar, Eden Hazard and Mata have been preferred this season, but Cech insists Lampard’s experience remains a vital component to the squad.
“The team changed, his age has changed, but heÔÇÖs still important for the team,” Cech continued.
“You can see that he might not start every game, he might not play every game. But when he plays, he plays well with his quality and his experience. This is something that is great to see.
“IÔÇÖve known him a long time. HeÔÇÖs been a fantastic player for the club. He continues to do so, so itÔÇÖs fantastic for him.
“HeÔÇÖs stayed already for years in the same club, bad times, good times. Mostly good times. That shows the loyalty of the player.”
