Barcelona have announced that an agreement has been reached with Chelsea that will see Cesc Fabregas return to the English capital.
The Spain international emerged as a target for the Blues after their manger Jose Mourinho expressed an interest in bringing him to Stamford Bridge last week.
Fabregas spent eight years in North London with Premier League rivals Arsenal before returning to his boyhood club in 2011.
However, the 27-year-old midfielder will be making way at Barca, who are in the process of undergoing a summer of major change sparked by the recent appointment of Luis Enrique as their new coach.
He has now put pen to paper on a five-year contract with the West Londoners after Gunners boss Arsene Wenger decided not to take up the option of re-signing his former captain.
Fabregas told his new club’s official website: “Firstly I would like to thank everyone at FC Barcelona where I enjoyed three wonderful years. It was my childhood club and I will always be proud and honoured that I had a chance to play for such a great team.
“I do feel that I have unfinished business in the Premier League and now is the right time for me to return. Yes, everyone knows that Arsenal had the first option to sign me. They decided not to take this option and therefore it wasn’t meant to be. I wish them well in the future.
“I considered all the other offers very carefully and I firmly believe that Chelsea is the best choice. They match my footballing ambitions with their hunger and desire to win trophies.
“They have an amazing squad of players and an incredible manager. I am fully committed to this team and I can’t wait to start playing.
“It was extremely important to me that this transfer was completed before the World Cup so that my mind will only be focused on hopefully helping my country try to retain the trophy.”
The Blaugrana confirmed the transfer in a statement on their official website, which read: “FC Barcelona and Chelsea FC have reached an agreement for the transfer of player Cesc Fabregas to the English club.
“FC Barcelona wishes to publicly thank Cesc Fabregas for his professionalism and dedication during his years at the Club, which will always be his home, and to wish him all the very best for the future.”
