Hull City lost for the first time in their pre-season campaign as they went down 2-1 to Birmingham City at St Andrew’s on Saturday.
Matt Green and Andrew Shinnie put the hosts in command, although they were made to sweat after Sone Aluko swept home a penalty with 20 minutes to go.
Steve Bruce included a number of new signings in his line-up with Allan McGregor, Maynor Figueroa, Danny Graham and Curtis Davies, on his return to Birmingham, all featuring from the start.
But the 52-year-old will not have been impressed with his side’s efforts at the back, as Green rose unmarked to nod home Shane Ferguson’s corner.
Things got worse for the Premier League new-boys two minutes after half-time as James Chester gifted possession to Scott Allan and the West Brom loanee set up Shinnie for a simple finish.
Shinnie could have doubled his tally soon after as he was played through on goal, but he dragged his effort well wide.
Nerves were sent jangling through the home supporters as Paul Robinson fouled Aluko in the penalty area and the St Andrew’s academy graduate picked himself up to score.
But Hull could not find another goal and will hope for an improved performance against Peterborough United on Monday.
