Bayern could cough up £31.5 million for Javi Martinez

Bayern Munich sporting director Matthias Sammer believes that paying Ôé¼40 million (┬ú31.5m) for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez would be “crazy”, but acknowledged that clubs are often forced to pay large fees in order to stay competitive.

The Bavarians start the new Bundesliga campaign on the back of two trophyless seasons, and have been widely tipped to sign midfield reinforcements as they look to reclaim the title from Borussia Dortmund.

Javi Martinez, as well as Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender, has been linked with a move to the Allianz Arena throughout the summer, but Bayern have maintained that they are not prepared to meet the Basque side’s asking price.

However, Sammer has now hinted that a formal bid for the Spain international could be imminent, with the start of die Roten’s league campaign on the horizon.

“Right now, we’re not doing it because it’s crazy,” Sammer mused to┬áKicker. “But if we want to do things on the pitch, then we must be crazy.”

Bayern have already added the likes of Mario Mandzukic, Claudio Pizarro, Tom Starke and Dante to their squad this summer.
