Kelechi Iheanacho remarked on Tuesday that the Super Eagles’ triumph over Egypt’s Pharaohs was due to their hard effort.
Nigeria defeated Egypt 1-0 in their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group ‘D’ opener at Garoua, Cameroon, thanks to Iheanacho’s spectacular first-half goal.
In the 30th minute, Iheanacho scored a stunning half-volley from the edge of the box into the top corner to put the game to bed.
During a post-match press conference, the Leicester City forward, who was named man-of-the-match, told reporters that his team’s victory was due to strong preparation and confidence.
“We prepared really well for them and we were confident and not scared of them. So, we showed that today on the pitch and we got the points that we needed. Hopefully, we will get more points in the competition and we’ll move forward from there,” he said.
While Augustine Eguavoen, the Super Eagles’ interim coach, added that his game plan was to respect all teams while not being afraid of any of them.
“I think we worked very hard, we respected them, but try to play our game to get maximum points from every game,” he said.
The Super Eagles’ next match is against Sudan on Saturday, followed by Guinea Bissau on January 19.
