Rivers Angels emerged triumphant in the 3rd place match of the NWFL Super Six tournament against Confluence Queens of Lokoja, securing a Bronze medal with a convincing 2-0 victory.
The match took place at the Stephen Keshi stadium in Asaba, Delta state, on Sunday, June 11.
Prior to the game, Rivers Angels faced disciplinary actions from the NWFL as they were fined one million naira and had two players suspended for their misconduct towards match officials after their 1-0 loss to Bayelsa Queens.
Despite their dominance in the first half, the team from Port Harcourt couldn’t find the breakthrough.
However, in the 61st minute, Adaobi Okah capitalized on a defensive error by Confluence Queens and effortlessly scored the opening goal, receiving a well-executed pass from her teammate, Chiamaka Okwuchukwu.
In the 68th minute, substitute Ikekhua Oghenebrume doubled the lead for Rivers Angels, securing a 2-0 victory and sealing their triumph.
As a result of their achievement, Rivers Angels will also receive a prize money of three million naira.
Expressing his joy, coach Edwin Okon of Rivers Angels commended his team for their success and acknowledged the strength of their opponents.
He stressed the importance of respecting every team in the NWFL, emphasizing that there are no underdogs and any team can defeat another.
Speaking further, Okon advised the organizers of the women’s league to improve the quality of officiating in order to attract more investment to the league.
