After defeating Plateau United 2-0 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Rivers United increased their lead at the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League standings to ten points.

The Pride of Rivers dominated the game, creating multiple opportunities for Fidelis Ilechukwu’s side, with Nyima Nwagua, Joseph Onoja, and Nelson Esor all coming close to scoring the game’s first goal, but they eventually breezed to the three points thanks to two goals scored as a result of their ruthless pressing.

After the Stanley Eguma-coached side won the ball back high up the pitch, Chijioke Akuneto was fouled in the box and scored a penalty in the first half.

After the break, Chijioke Akuneto was the first to react, scoring the game-winning goal from a goalmouth scramble, his 14th of the season.

Plateau United attempted to reclaim the game after the second goal, but the bravery of goalkeeper Sochima Victor and the persistence of the back four were too strong to overcome.

Rivers United looked more assured, with Man of the Match Morice Chukwu and Joseph Onoja linking nicely in the middle of the park to secure the game and look more deserving of their win.

The result puts Rivers United 10 points clear of Plateau United in second place, and the gap might be a boost for Stanley Eguma’s team.

On Sunday, June 5, Rivers United will face Wikki Tourist of Bauchi in an NPFL matchday 32 match.
