Rivers United defeated Kano Pillars 1-0 away from home in the Nigeria Professional Football League, courtesy of Nyima Nwagua’s strike.

On a bright and beautiful afternoon at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna, the sprightly forward took advantage of wayward play from Pillars goalkeeper Idris Ibrahim to secure win for Stanley Eguma’s team.

Rivers United got off to a better start than the Pillars, with Ishaq Kayode’s lethal low ball frightening the Pillars goalkeeper and forcing Ibrahim to make a save.

The hosts were careful with their threats, with Saidu Salisu coming close to scoring from a corner before Sochima Victor saved a Rabiu Ali effort.

In the second half, Sai Masu Gida had more chances than in the first, with Sochima Victor needing to save Rabiu Ali’s strong effort.

The game-winner came in the 70th minute, when Nyima Nwagua, a former Kano Pillars attacker, capitalised on the goalkeeper’s error to score the game-winner.

Resentment grew in the stands as Salisu Yusuf’s team struggled to claw their way back into the game.

The Pride of Rivers’ back four of Kazie Eyinnaya, Ebube Duru, Fabian Nworie, and player of the match – Dennis Ndasi held firm against waves of Pillars attack despite late pressure and a number of forced anxious moments.

Rivers United has now kept two consecutive clean sheets, and the team is gaining much-needed great momentum at the top of the league table.

Rivers United leads the NPFL standings with 35 points from 16 games. Plateau United is a little behind them.

Shooting Stars will be visiting he Wike Boys at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Sunday, March 6th, 2022, with the game starting at 4 p.m. (NIG time).
