Reigning champions, Algeria on the verge of Afcon elimination after shock loss

Algeria’s 35-game unbeaten run came to an end on Sunday evening when they lost 1-0 to Equatorial Guinea in their Afcon 2021 group stage match.

The defending AFCON champions have struggled to score in their first two games and are currently ranked last in Group E after two games.

Equatorial Guinea, who are currently rated 114th in the world, completely astonished Mahrez, Ounas, and the defending Champions in Douala.

In Cameroon, the Desert Foxes’ miseries continued when they were defeated by the 49th-ranked African side in their second group match.

The Djamel Belmadi’s team was defeated 1-0 by Equatorial Guinea in their second Group E match at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

Esteban Obiang’s 70th-minute goal halted the Desert Foxes’ 35-game unbeaten streak, which had started with a 1-0 loss to Benin in an Afcon qualifier in October 2018.

Algeria now have a game at hand that they must win in order to move to the knockout stage.

On Thursday, they will be hoping to secure all three points when they play Ivory Coast, while Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone will meet on the same day.
