Pre-season Friendly: Rivers United Beat champions Akwa United

Rivers United defeated Akwa United in their pre-season friendly at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Sunday.

The “Pride of Rivers” took an the early lead in the 9th minute through Fortune Omoniwari after a spirited effort from pacy winger Ishaq Kayode and it turned out to be the match winner after experience Nigeria international Theophilus Afelokai prevented Akwa United from drawing level by saving a penalty in the 66th minute.

While addressing newsmen, Rivers United Technical manager – Stanley Eguma said;

“It has been very interesting and very studious but I must tell you. As soon as last season ended, we never rested, we had to swing into action considering the fact that we are behind CAF calendar, we had to do everything possible to see if we could raise a team to play in the Champion league and I think that’s what we are doing now.”

He added that;

“We have injected some new players into the team, only few of them and I think that most of them are responding and their performance is encouraging and I believe that if we keep working this way, we can get there but it’s still work in progress.”

Rivers United and Akwa United are involved in a two-legged pre-season friendly games and will confront Akwa United in the return leg on Tuesday 31st August 2021.
