Ogenyi Onazi, former Super Eagles midfielder, has cancelled his contract with Turkish second division team Denizlispor because the club failed to honor his contract and defaulted on his wage payments.
The 28-year-old returned to the club from FK Zalgiris in Lithuania in August and has appeared in 11 games this season, starting four of them in the league.
According to reports coming out of Turkey, the former Eagle’s contract was terminated owing to poor performance, but Onazi has refuted such accusations, threatening legal action if the Turkish club continues to lie about the issue.
The former Lazio player said that he has not been paid for the past four months and that he can no longer remain silent in the wake of the club’s President’s lies.
While speaking to AOIFootball.com, Onazi said;
“I can confirm to you that I have just terminated my contract with my club because of unpaid wages for 4 months, I did not want to terminate but the president has lied too much. When I came back I told him that I don’t want to have the same issues we had during my first stint. I even gave them a discount of about 60 thousand euro, still the President did not honour his part of the agreement.”
Despite being owed for 18 months, the 2013 AFCON winner explained why he returned to the club, claiming that the President pleaded with him to ensure he helped the club back to the Super league.
“I came back to get money from previous seasons owed over one and a half years and the president pleaded that I help the team return to the super league but he could not keep to his promise. I am disappointed,” Onazi said.
The midfielder is already looking for a new club and is eager to get back into regular action.
Denizlispor, meanwhile, are presently 17th in the table with 15 points after 15 games, needing a massive miracle to avoid relegation after winning just four games this season, with Onazi appearing in all four of those victories.
