Nottingham Forest broke their transfer record to bring in the 24-year-old forward as their first signing after being promoted to the Premier League.

After passing his medical on Thursday, the Super Eagles youngster signed a five-year contract at the City Ground, and the top-flight newcomers paid Union Berlin £17m for him.

Awoniyi spent six years on the payroll at Liverpool, yet he never played a single game for the Reds, not even in a preseason friendly.

He spent more time on loan at several clubs throughout his time at Anfield, before relocating permanently to join the German side in the Bundesliga.

Taiwo Awoniyi claimed that playing in the English League has always been an ambition of his and that he is happy to have joined the Premier League newcomers – Nottingham Forest.

I’m very excited to be here at Nottingham Forest. It’s always been my dream to play in the Premier League and having spoken to Steve Cooper about our ambitions and looking at Forest, with its great history, it’s a club that I want to be part of.” – Awoniyi said.

A sell-on provision requires Forest to provide the Premier League runners-up 10% of the purchase price.

Forest outbid numerous clubs in England and Germany for the services of the striker, who scored 15 goals in the Bundesliga last season.
