With a heavy heart, Nyima Nwagua, the forward for Rivers United, expressed deep disappointment regarding the team’s failure to bring home the NPFL trophy in the Super Six tournament.
Rivers United approached their final match in the Super Six tournament with a sense of urgency, knowing that a victory was crucial to secure the championship title for the second consecutive season, with a total of 11 points.
Regrettably, the team could only secure victories in two games against Sunshine Stars and Bendel Insurance, while the remaining matches concluded in frustrating draws against Remo Stars, Lobi Stars, and Enyimba.
Consequently, Rivers United found themselves in third position with merely nine points from five games, allowing Remo Stars to surpass them in the final league standings due to a superior goal difference.
Feel gutted we couldn't bring the trophy home, but I'm however proud of this team, we fought till the end.
Want to thank the good people of Rivers State, our supporters & well wishers for their unflinching support.
We look forward to next season in the league & on the continent pic.twitter.com/4ziG1cqrK9— Nyima Nwagua (@Nyimason28) June 12, 2023
Despite the outcome, Nwagua’s individual performance stood out as commendable, as he contributed seven goals to Rivers United’s 2022/23 campaign.
In the Super Six tournament, he emerged as the team’s leading scorer with two goals. Nwagua’s dedication and skill played a significant role in the team’s overall performance.
Enyimba, on the other hand, clinched the prestigious title for the ninth time, becoming the new champions of the Super Six tournament.
Their triumph not only brought glory but also secured them the substantial prize money of N100 million, solidifying their status as one of the top teams in Nigerian football.
While the disappointment of falling short in the tournament is palpable, Nyima Nwagua’s perspective remains positive, demonstrating his resilience and sportsmanship, qualities that define Rivers United.
He continues to take pride in his team’s unwavering efforts and resilience until the very end.
Despite the outcome, Nwagua expressed gratitude to the people of Rivers State, as well as the team’s supporters and well-wishers, for their unwavering support throughout the season.
Looking forward, he expressed a glimmer of excitement for the upcoming season in the league and on the continental stage.
As they prepare for the forthcoming season, the team is determined to learn from their experience and strive for even greater success in both domestic and continental competitions.
