It was a good weekend in the NPFL for the trio of Akwa United, Kano Pillars, and MFM FC as they extended their incredible unbeaten runs in the Nigeria Professional Football League on Sunday

Akwa returned to winning ways and the top of the table after a deserved 2-1 win over fellow title contenders Kwara United in week 24.

After their goalless draw the last time with Enugu Rangers, the Promise Keepers defeated their rivals from Kwara in a clear top of the table clash.

One goal in either half from John Friday and new signing Nasiri Jibril earned Kennedy Boboye’s men all three points and a return to the top of the log.

The win was Akwa’s 12th of the season, which also helped them to stretch their unbeaten run to 14 matches (8 wins and 6 draws).

Akwa United are going strong this season.

Thanks to their superior goal difference, they lead the table with 45 points, the same as Kano Pillars, who held their hosts Plateau United to a goalless affair in Jos.

That result also means Pillars extended their unbeaten streak to 9 matches (6 wins and 3 draws).

In the other six (6) matches played on Sunday, another team enjoying an impressive run of games is MFM, who also extended their unbeaten run to six (6) matches.

The Olukoya Boys defeated Dakkada FC 1-0 in Lagos, stretching their run to 6 matches without defeat, keeping five (5) successive clean sheets. They are the only team that didn’t concede a single goal in May.

Meanwhile, elsewhere, Enyimba and FCIU were held to goalless draws at home by their respective visitors Enugu Rangers and Heartland of Owerri.

For Sunshine Stars, there seems to be no respite after another defeat, this time, away in Makurdi to Lobi Stars.

Following the resignation of Gbenga Oguntobe as their boss, the Owena Babes went, saw but failed to conquer their hosts Lobi, who won 2-1.

The defeat was Sunshine’s 11th of the campaign, they have now gone 17 matches without a win since they defeated Rangers 3-1 on January 31, 2021.
